A little detail

 

Here are the spreads from the second state

the large image is fractured and a circular path is followed from the single plant to the denseist thicket

as well as plants there are various creatures of the country

slow worms are legless lizards

slowly the biodiversity builds up

some of the spreads are intended to by four pages long

all this detail is built up by scratching into the plate

although this colour is chine cole

sometime the spreads a upside down

this bumble bee is after the bramble blossom

the wren is a very small bird with a very loud voice

bramble, elder and hazel branches

and a sleeping dormouse

an elder flower rather green

rather brutal hazel leaves

a hedge brown needs colouring

An Entangled Bank

Here are the first and second states of ‘an entangled bank”.

Growth and Form

A couple of ideas have come together to make this project something special.

Firstly, I was thinking about Spring and Green and remembered the phrase from the very end of ‘The origin of species’, by C. Darwin.

It is interesting to contemplate a tangled bank, clothed with many plants of many kinds, with birds singing on the bushes, with various insects flitting about, and with worms crawling through the damp earth,

And then I was looking through some books on Bookbinding and came across something called a meander book, where you make a little book by cutting into one sheet of paper and then folding it up. The spreads of the book occupy different parts of the single page.

Putting these two ideas together would give me a series of related images where I could explore the ecology of darwin bank.

Spring Green – preliminary work

So I had the first idea for a suite of plates: Green ink and plants. But what kind of plants and what kind of drawing? Here are some prints investigating the tools of dry point and the subject matter.
