I’ve long been tempted by this box of bricks.  

 And this weekend I finally succumbed when I discovered how much it was on a certain internet site.

Griffith Cracks

I have finally managed to pick up a book I ordered way back when I wrote this post. Not only that I’ve read most of it even though it’s full of words like diffusion-limited aggregation, dense-branching morphology and self similarity.

Choices – I’m trying to find some suitable pebbles for the long piece I started last week

 

this paper was bleached and went purple and blue. it was torn along the weakened creases and some of the damaged paper was removed. the tearing doesn’t seem too wrk as well as cutting.

monoprint using a stiff brush and dilute paint. i hope to perfect this technique in making gneiss.

this top paper absorbed white ink well and created a good web of veins.

cutting along existing folds. there is a narrative, 1st the paper was stretched top right/bottom left, then in the centre on the opposite diagonal

I scrunched these damp papers with the intent to make specific crack patterns. This one hasn’t been glued down yet so the amount of stretch can change

having a system in mind when creating cracks in the country rock improves the out come. darker areas around veins came first by making paint puddles

simple is more effective?

can the fractal nature of rocks really be carried over in to little pieces of paper? how to chose the most expressive bit when geology happens on a massive scale

getting the hang of less is more – all these images about 20cm originally

I’ve been busy this last fortnight making some pictures.

 Golden Ratio

over winter I worked my long thin canvases. I finished one, but not the other. I’m going back to it now, after finding the ice-cream cobble on Llandudno beach. 

I did some sketches thinking about proportion  And then taped suitably sized papers into position. 

 You can play around with levels with the camera, but not go too mad – thought the blue background is not original.
